“We’re not talking about work tonight,” King says as I duck into the seat next to him in the back of his Yukon XL Denali. The space inside the vehicle is insane. The last time we were in a sports car better suited for California’s open highway than the streets of New York. Now we’re in a tank that looks like it costs the same as what the military drops in a day.

“I need to talk to you about work though,” I point out. Especially after my little chat with Nigel yesterday.

“Nope. We’ll talk about it in the morning. Tonight is for us.”

His words should seem reasonable. After all, he’s proposing for us to actually get to know each other better versus our only link being work and a penchant for office affairs. But I really want to discuss everything I know so far but bite my tongue. I can wait twelve hours before bursting our bubble he wants to maintain.

King shifts in his seat, his eyes flicking towards his driver before settling on me. “I can see the wheels turning in your beautiful head. Stop them. Take the night off and be here with me. It’s Friday night, we should be having fun.”

“Your idea of fun and mine are two very different concepts.” I snort. “You prefer going out to the club and hanging with your friends and I prefer being at home and reading a new paranormal romance book.”

His blue eyes pierce mine as he squints. “Paranormal romance? Is that where you read about a dog fucking a person?”

I smack his leg. “First of all, that’s incredibly obscene and wrong. No. It’s like love stories with paranormal beings.”

King scrubs a hand over his jaw as he smirks at me. “Romance books are basically porn, you know.”

This man. I roll my eyes and tug the hem of my skirt down as I twist to look at him better. “Of course you would say that, you’re a guy and only focus on the sex.”

“Lies.” He motions between the two of us with a flick of his finger. “We’re going out to dinner right now.”

“Exactly. Because you want to fuck me.”

His driver inhales wrong and starts to choke, smashing his fist into his chest as he coughs. Apparently my candor wasn’t something he was expecting from one of King’s dates.

Now it’s King’s turn to roll his eyes. “Yes, I want to fuck you, but I’m perfectly capable of withholding myself. I’m not a philanderer.”

“You are the perfect definition of a philanderer!” I can’t help but laugh at the mocking scowl he sends me. Then he ends up laughing as well.

“I’ve read romance books just so you know.” He waves his hand in the air between us. “Maybe not the paranormal kind, but I do enjoy reading. They’re nice to unwind with at the end of a stressful day. That or trashy television.”

My eyebrows shoot up. “You watch trashy television?”

“The UK makes great trashy television shows.
